Hydrogen Water, Space, and Health: Exploring the Potential of Hydrogen Water in Aerospace and Human Health
Water and Hydrogen Research in Space
Although naturally occurring hydrogen-rich water (water with a high concentration of dissolved hydrogen gas) is not found in space, scientists have discovered significant water- and hydrogen-related phenomena in the universe and are exploring ways to utilize water resources in space environments.
1. Discovery of Space Water
The Herschel Space Observatory of the European Space Agency (ESA) discovered an unusual form of charged water vapor in interstellar dust clouds, known as charged space water. Unlike the three common states of water on Earth—solid, liquid, and gas—this new phase occurs when ultraviolet radiation ionizes water molecules, stripping away electrons and leaving them with a positive charge.
2. Water Extraction on the Moon
Chinese scientists, based on samples retrieved by Chang’e-5, proposed a method to extract water from lunar soil. Research indicates that minerals such as ilmenite in lunar soil store large amounts of hydrogen atoms from the solar wind. When heated, these hydrogen atoms react with iron oxides in the minerals, producing water, along with byproducts such as iron and ceramic glass.
Experimental data show that 1 gram of molten lunar regolith can yield 51–76 milligrams of water, and 1 ton of lunar regolith can produce about 50 kilograms of water. This discovery presents a potential sustainable water source for lunar bases and future space missions.
3. The Significance of Water Production in Space
Producing water on the Moon or space stations can provide drinking water and oxygen for astronauts while also enabling the production of hydrogen and oxygen as rocket fuel through electrolysis. This could significantly reduce reliance on Earth-based supplies, lowering mission costs and logistical challenges.
Hydrogen Water and Health: Why Are Scientists Interested in Hydrogen Water?
Scientific research has shown that hydrogen water possesses strong antioxidant properties, helping to alleviate oxidative stress, which occurs when free radicals damage cellular structures. Oxidative stress is linked to various diseases, including:
- Heart disease
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Diabetes
- Hypertension
- Parkinson’s disease
- Cancer
Additionally, radiation exposure can exacerbate oxidative stress, leading to cell damage and inflammation. This is why, in 2010, scientists hypothesized that hydrogen gas might help mitigate the negative effects of radiation, such as reducing cellular damage caused by radiation exposure.
Scientific Support in Aerospace: The Potential of Hydrogen Water
Since the 2010 hypothesis suggesting that hydrogen water might counteract radiation effects, at least two significant studies (both published in 2013) have provided further evidence of hydrogen water’s potential applications in space medicine.
1. Hydrogen Gas as Radiation Protection
Researchers investigated whether molecular hydrogen could protect human cells, and their findings indicated that:
Hydrogen gas reduced cell death rates after radiation exposure, suggesting a potential role in radiation protection.
2. Hydrogen Water and Bone Loss in Microgravity
Another study used rats as test subjects. Scientists exposed the rats to simulated microgravity for six weeks while providing them with hydrogen water. The results showed that:
Hydrogen water significantly reduced bone loss, indicating potential benefits for astronaut bone health.
Although these studies provide preliminary evidence, further research is required to confirm hydrogen water’s specific benefits in space environments.
How Can Astronauts Consume Hydrogen in Space?
Scientists have proposed two methods for astronauts to use hydrogen in space:
- Inhalation of Hydrogen Gas
- However, since hydrogen is highly flammable, strict safety measures must be enforced, such as keeping hydrogen concentration below 3.9% in the cabin.
- Drinking Hydrogen-Rich Water (Hydrogen Water)
- Hydrogen dissolves in water without causing flammability issues.
- To date, no known side effects of hydrogen water have been discovered, making hydrogen water the safer option.
NASA, We Can Help!
One of the challenges in using hydrogen water in space is ensuring that hydrogen gas dissolves efficiently in water and remains stable.
We believe that hydrogenbaby H2O technology can solve this issue!
- Our equipment uses electrolysis technology to break down water molecules and generate stable molecular hydrogen, producing high-concentration hydrogen water.
- This method is not only feasible but also ensures optimal hydrogen dissolution in water.
