Since 1 liter of water is approximately 1,000,000 milligrams, 1 PPM is equivalent to 1 milligram of hydrogen dissolved per liter of water.
How to Measure PPM?
There are several methods to measure the PPM of hydrogen in water, and each method can yield different results based on the waters pH, temperature, and purity.
- Blue Reagent Method: This method can be done at home by adding a blue reagent to hydrogenated water. If hydrogen is dissolved in the water, the blue reagent reacts with the hydrogen molecules, causing the reagent to turn colorless. By continuing to add the reagent until it turns blue again, you reach the endpoint of the titration, and you can calculate the hydrogen content in PPM.
- Digital Electronic Meter: This instrument can also be used at home to measure the water’s Oxidation-Reduction Potential (ORP). It calculates a theoretical hydrogen PPM value using an algorithm based on the ORP reading.
- Gas Chromatography (GC): This is a laboratory method performed by professional chemists that provides the most accurate and reliable hydrogen content data.
Why is PPM Important?
